Hello and Welcome to BLINGuals

Research has unambiguously shown that multi-lingual children have an edge throughout their life.  But for parents, it requires much planning, effort and dedication while juggling many other priorities.  Please stay a while, pick up some useful tips and share with us your practical, real World experiences.

A good place to start is the primer and the BLINGuals Daily Planner spreadsheet (new!)  Feel free to comment on blog entries, check out the survey and participate in the discussion forum on facebook.

Thanks so much My Bilingual Boys for the kind review of the BLINGuals flash cards.  Glad your children enjoyed them!

A few months ago, I put together a "Daily Planner" spreadsheet to help parents track kids exposure to different languages.  Earlier this week, I was corresponding with a European Mom who's juggling four (gasp!) different languages at home.

Once she plugged the week's activity into the spreadsheet, her conclusion was clear: "I'm overcompensating on French!” Sure enough, over half a day, on average, is spent communicating in French, at the expense of English and Spanish.

Here’s how she did it:

First, she set up the basics: languages, activities and types of days with different schedules.

Next, she estimated for each ½ hour period what the child is up to.  She entered a different schedule for “Fridays” and “Rest of Week”, but you can easily set up a “Week day” and “Weekend” schedule.

Thank you so much Mommy Maestra for the wonderful review of the BLINGuals flash cards.  We're glad your little girl enjoyed them.  Monica is also giving away a pack on her blog - Good luck!

Parents are looking up to multilingual baby sitters and nannies for help with teaching language skills.  The New York Times specifically looks at parents with little or no knowledge in a given language.

Thank you to our friends at Multilingual Mania, for publishing our guest post titled "What Mommy Call That?"  It's about the funny little things that happen when my child starts translating what he hears...

Enjoy!

Chelsea at Twee Poppets is currently giving away a set of English/Spanish BLINGuals flash cards.  The contest ends midnight August 19, 2010.  Good luck!

What does the name "Twee Poppets" mean?

Twee (adj.): affectedly or excessively dainty, delicate, cute, or quaint

Poppet (n.): an endearingly sweet or pretty child or young girl (often used as an affectionate form of address)

Put the two together, and you've got the central theme of this blog: cute little items for cute little kids!

Dena at CincinnatiCoupons.net and her 3-year-old, recently checked out the BLINGuals cards with her 3-year-old:

"I have been putting one card up on the fridge every few day and my whole family can review the word. I have also been reviewing these with my 2 older boys, trying to get back in school mode, so they can maybe impress their spanish teacher. The cards are the same size as a deck of cards but they are made of a heavy plastic, which is nice because they won’t tear."

Check out her full experience here.  Thank you Dena for the kind review!  Glad you and your kids enjoyed the flash cards :)
